Movie Review: All Quite on the Western Front

Image
On Saturday, I watched the movie called All Quiet on the Western Front on Netflix.  It’s a movie based on a novel by Erich Maria Remarque of the same name.  The movie was very long,  about two and a half hours. It talks about World War I, where the Germans fought against the French. Many German soldiers died on the front line while fighting the French. A new soldier named Paul was a student. He was scared and shocked at the beginning, but eventually, he used a grenade to explode the tanker and used the knife to kill the enemy. Kaz, an old soldier, used a rifle to kill many French soldiers. But they were all killed by the French enemies in the end. It was so sad.  I think the author’s purpose of the movie is that war is bad for soldiers. I like this movie because I learned that war is very bloody, and I hope the world will be at peace.

Skunk Encounter: A Surprising Moment

Image
I was moving the garbage cans from the street to the backyard when I noticed a skunk had come inside through the open gate. It was searching for food. I asked my dad to help me remove the skunk from the backyard. He used a stick to guide the skunk out. I tried to scare the skunk away by saying, "shoo, shoo, skunk." However, it lifted its tail to defend itself. Finally, the skunk left the backyard and went out onto the street. Seeing the skunk was unexpected, and it surprised me.

Hiking at Coyote Hills

Image
On Sunday, my family, friends, and I went to Coyote hills for a hike. We hiked at Bayview and Meadowlark Trail loop. In total, we walked for five miles. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and the sky was blue. The hills were green, with a few poppies blooming. The trail was easy to hike, so I liked to lead our group. At the top of the mountain, I saw the full view of The Bay. We took pictures there.  Later when we took a break, we drank water and ate snacks. During this hiking event, I made new friends named Amanda and Vivian, who are twins. Amanda is very talkative, and she likes to talk about Korean culture. I asked Siri to translate “hello” into Korean, which was very funny. After the hike, we went to a restaurant called Little Sichuan for dinner. I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp, which was very delicious. The parents ordered vegetables and spicy dishes. They were too hot for me, so I drank ice water to cool down. While hiking, I felt very relaxed. I had a wonderful time hiking wit

Exploring California Academy of Sciences

Image
My dad and I went to the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.  While I was there, I saw a white alligator swimming in the aquarium tank. We went to see the bugs show, a cool animation show. In the show, there was a dragonfly flying in the air, and there was a frog jumping up and down in the mud. Then, I played with the bug simulator, which helped me see what it is like to be a bug. I was a bumblebee, and it was very funny because of the buzzing sound. After, I watched the movie called The Life of Coral Reef in the auditorium. The movie showed coral reefs being polluted by the trash in the ocean. I think trash is bad for the environment, and people should be more mindful. We went to the Osher Rainforest. The rainforest had many green plants, loud animals, and hungry venus fly traps. I saw many butterflies drinking orange nectar, a green snake relaxing in the habitat, and long black centipedes chilling out. There were also ants carrying green leaves. And I heard birds tweeti

Shawama Spiced Grilling Cheese

Image
I made the shawarma-spiced grilling cheese. The meal includes three parts: rice, salad, and grilled cheese. First, I cut the shallot into thinly slices. Next, I peeled and minced the garlic. Then, I roughly chopped the pistachios.   I trimmed and halved both the cucumber and the tomatoes lengthwise and thinly sliced the cucumber crosswise into half-moons. I then zested a quarter of lemon.  After all the preparation was done, I was ready to cook. First, I melted the butter in a small pot over medium-high heat, and I added the minced shallot, half the garlic, half the pistachios, half the shawarma spice blend, and a pinch of salt. Then, I stirred in the rice, stock concentrate, a cup of water, and a big pinch of salt. Meanwhile, I made the salad in a small bowl and combined all the vegetables. And put the lemon zest and drizzle the salad with olive oil. I also made the sauce with sour cream and garlic, seasoned it with salt, and I added water. Next, I seasoned the cheese with a shawarma
